Gynecologic oncology focuses on treating cancers of the pelvis and female reproductive systems, including ovarian, cervical, endometrial, vulvar, and vaginal cancers.
  • Endometrial cancer, cancer in the lining of the uterus, is the most common gynecologic cancer.
  • Ovarian cancer is the second most common gynecologic cancer.
  • Cervical cancer remains a powerful health threat around the world. Nearly all women with cervical cancer have human papillomavirus (HPV). The HPV vaccine can protect against many strains of the virus. Routine Pap test screening has reduced deaths due to cervical cancer by 74 percent over the past 50 years.
  • Vulvar cancer is a rare form of gynecologic cancer, accounting for only about four percent of reproductive cancers in women.

Innovative treatment options

  • Advanced laparoscopic surgery. This is an effective minimally invasive technique that has been shown to result in shorter hospital stays, less discomfort and a shorter recovery period.
  • Robotic surgery. This approach has the same advantages as advanced laparoscopy, and it allows surgeons to operate with increased precision and accuracy while minimizing trauma to surrounding tissues.
  • Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT). This radiation technique is used to treat advanced cancers that are localized but have spread from the original tumor site in people who might otherwise have no treatment options.
  • Intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This technique involves the direct delivery of chemotherapy into the abdomen for the treatment of ovarian cancer.
